The ageing process isn’t all bad. There are many positive aspects to being a little older and wiser. But the arrival of wrinkles and sagging skin usually isn’t one of them.
Most of my patients tell me they just want to feel confident and happy when they look in the mirror or see photographs of themselves. They don’t want to completely change their facial features or aspire to look 25 again. Their aim is to look refreshed and to have some of the lost volume restored in a very natural way.
Lately, I hear the term “cancelling of age” quite a lot. This means people are ‘cancelling’ previous expectations of what certain ages should look like. As a society, we are living longer, healthier lives. The focus is on positive ageing and looking and feeling our best selves; rather than on striving to try and reverse the ageing process.
A stretched and frozen face is seen as far less desirable than it did in the past. As is an obviously over-filled older face. A more natural and subtle approach to facial aesthetics is one that women increasingly want to focus on, along with losing their fear of ageing. I wholeheartedly agree.
This has always been my own clinic ethos – to replace volume that has been lost over time, rather than putting more in than was ever there before. Whilst at the same time, rejuvenating the quality, health and appearance of the skin.
Categories of Ageing
Facial ageing can be placed into 3 categories:
- Superficial layer ageing (what you see on the surface of the skin)
- Middle layer ageing (the muscles and fat pads)
- Deep layer ageing (what is happening deeper down to the structure of the face and bones of the skull)
A little bit of Botox can’t solve everything
When it comes to aesthetic treatments, it is important to understand that “a little bit of Botox” alone cannot solve all our face and neck issues as we age.
We need to employ a whole face and neck approach, using a combination of injectable treatments and the use of tech devices to tighten, contour, smooth and rejuvenate the skin. The addition of a medical grade skincare regime and a high factor facial SPF will help optimise results.
