Softening Marionette Lines

Marionette lines are the lines that run from the corners of the mouth down towards the chin. As we age, the loss of fat and elasticity in the skin can cause these lines to become more pronounced. They can also give the mouth a down-turned look, which can potentially give the impression of a permanent frown, or make people appear more tired or older than they are.

Dermal fillers work well to soften these deep lines, correcting loss of volume.

Softening the Nasolabial Fold

Naslolabial folds are the lines that run from the outer corner of the nostril to the corner of the mouth. They are natural facial contours that can become more prominent with ageing and the loss of volume in the cheek area.

Dermal filler can be used to successfully soften these lines. The exact injection points will depend very much on the facial anatomy and skin profile of the client. However, typically Laurie will apply filler to the upper cheek area in order to lift and soften for a natural, youthful look, without adding too much unnecessary volume to the face (thereby avoiding the dreaded tell tale overinflated cheeks).

Clients often notice the nasolabial fold as one of the first signs of ageing and so it is one of the most frequently requested treatments.

As is the case with the vast majority of dermal filler treatments, there is minimal downtime. Occasionally there can be very mild swelling that will tend to go down within a day or so and there can be sight bruising at the injection sites. However, Laurie can often minimise the risk of both bruising and swelling by often using a blunt tip cannula.

*Please note that results may vary from client to client depending on various considerations such as age, lifestyle and medical background.

Dermal fillers are soft tissue fillers that are injected into the skin to soften lines and wrinkles. They can also be used to replace lost facial volume, define features and create a fuller lip. The majority of fillers are made up of hyaluronic acid, which is a natural substance found in the body that binds water and gives skin volume.

Yes, dermal fillers have been used for many years, resulting in millions of successful treatments. Filler treatments should be carried out by a qualified and experienced medical professional who is highly trained in facial anatomy. We predominantly use Juvérderm ® and Restylane® which are both FDA approved.

We advise you to avoid blood thinners (alcohol, aspirin, Vitamin E) for 2 days prior to your treatment as thin blood increases the risk of bruising at the injection site. Taking Arnica tablets before treatment will also reduce the risk of bruising.

Anti-wrinkle or muscle relaxant injections are also commonly referred to as Botulinum Toxin A, or are known under brand names such as Botox® or Azzalure®. They work by temporarily blocking the nerve signals to the affected muscles around the injection site. The muscles subsequently become more relaxed, in turn reducing the appearance of lines and wrinkles.

Dermal fillers can be slightly uncomfortable, depending on the depth of the injection required. However, the majority of dermal fillers contain a local anaesthetic which minimises discomfort. We can also use numbing creams.

You will see the results immediately with further improvement in the vitality of the skin developing over 1-4 weeks.

There may occasionally be slight swelling, redness, bruising or bleeding at the injection site, however the use of a cannula can greatly reduce the chance of bruising. Any side effects are usually temporary and disappear within a few days. Due to the sensitivity of the lips however, recovery time is usually 24-48 hours with swelling, bruising and tenderness lasting up to a week.

The vast majority of clients will not experience any symptoms following treatment. However, in the instances of bruising, swelling or redness we recommend the application of a cold compress.

Arnica cream can also reduce bruising. Generally we recommend that you let the area settle immediately after the procedure and avoid touching it. Additionally we advise that you don’t have facial treatments for the next 24-48 hours and avoid strenuous exercise, alcohol, heat or excessive exposure during the following 6-10 hours directly after treatment.

One of the advantages of dermal filler is that although the effects are long lasting, they are not permanent. The effects generally last between 6-12 months, but are dependent on a range of factors such as the area treated, the skin type and condition and also the metabolism of the client.

Hyaluronic acid fillers such as Restylane and Juvéderm may be rapidly dissolved with the enzyme hyaluronidase. However it is rare for a client to request this following treatment by a reputable practitioner.
